Built in 1920, the Drake provided a transition between the fashionable Gold Coast residential area and the new commercial north Michigan Avenue now known as the Magnificent Mile.  It was also the original home of WGN radio.  This hotel is the epitome of classic, elegant and opulence, it is definitely one of the most beautiful luxury historic hotels in Chicago.   In pop culture, the Drake was used in the films Risky Business, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Hero, What Women Want, Continental Divide, Flags of Our Fathers, Wicker Park, Mission: Impossible, and Carol

SURROUNDINGS

The Drake is located on the lake side of Michigan Avenue right before Lake Shore Drive.  It is 2 blocks away from the John Hancock center and the beginning of the Magnificent Mile a prime location.  Just across the street is a park where you can have your wedding photos taken, it is great for first looks or bridal parties and even has a gazebo.  Right up the street on the east side Oak Street Beach another great wedding photo spot.  Guests can enjoy all the shopping on the Mag Mile.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

If you are a Hilton Honors  member, make sure to collect your point for your wedding as The Drake Hotel is part of the Hilton chain of hotels.  Depending on the size of your wedding you will want to check out the “Gold Coast Room” and “Grand Ballroom’ both great event spaces for your wedding.  While going around Chicago and taking pictures is awesome, also consider going around the hotel for indoor shots, the staircases and lobby are great spots.  During the summer and months (End of May to early September) Navy Pier puts on a fireworks show on Wednesday and Saturday nights.
